    Alternative Country Codes

Long Island is an island in the southeast area of New York. It has an area of 1,377 square miles (3,567 sq km), and a population of 7,559,372 as of July 1, 2006, making it the largest island in the 48 contiguous U.S. states, and the most populated in any U.S. state or territory. Long Island is the 17th most populous island in the world, ahead of Ireland, Sicily, and Jamaica, and with a far smaller area than any of these islands.

True to its name, the island is much longer than it is wide, jutting out some 118 miles (190 km) from New York Harbor, with only from 12 to 20 miles (32 km) between the southern Atlantic coast and Long Island Sound. The westernmost end of Long Island contains the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn (Kings County) and Queens (Queens County), and the central and eastern portions contain Nassau and Suffolk counties. However, colloquial usage of the term "Long Island" or "the Island" refers only to the suburban Nassau and Suffolk counties; the more urban Brooklyn and Queens are not always thought of as being part of Long Island, as they are politically part of New York City, though geographically they are on the island.

The Native American name for Long Island is Paumanok, meaning "The Island that Pays Tribute". This was due to the fact that more warlike tribes in the areas surrounding the island forced the relatively peaceful Long Islanders to give tributes and payment in order to avoid attacks.

    Dr. Evil

Things haven't changed much since the days of Columbus. The area surrounding the island is still full of more belligerent tribes, who still demand tribute from Long Islanders! The tribe of Manhattan demands peaceful Long Islanders of Brooklyn and Queens tribute, and for no real benefits in return. The tribes of New York State also make heavy demands for tribute, and to all Long Islanders. Then there is the tribe next to the Potomac River, which demands even higher tribute from peaceful Long Islanders of Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk.

Making matters even worse, the evil tribe next to the Potomac River, and its affiliated tribes, have only demanded tribute for making wars on a global scale, but when the peaceful tribes of Long Island need to use a Top-Level Domain (TLD) to distinguish themselves from the belligerent tribes that surround them, always up to no good, they are still forced to pay tribute to the tribes of the Principality of Liechtenstein, with whom Long Islanders never even smoked a peace pipe!

Well, this Long Island Chieftain is fed up with paying tribute to American and other foreign tribes, who do not honor us in their pow-wow feasts, so we gave the geographic Long Island composed of Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk a new name, one that means that we will no longer pay tribute to foreign tribes, and the new name we gave our beloved island is Independent Long Island (ILI)! We then made a nice and very symbolic flag for the sovereign state of Independent Long Island (ILI), and since we were already running our own Internet root, we started the new .ILI TLD for all Independent Long Islanders. Now we ILI tribes will have a nice pow-wow festival, and your non-ILI tribe is not invited!
